Hart Crane - Legend (Leggenda)
To Waldo Frank

As silent as a mirror is believed
Realities plunge in silence by ...

I am not ready for repentance;
Nor to match regrets. For the moth
Bends no more than the still
Imploring flame. And tremorous
In the white falling flakes
Kisses are,—
The only worth all granting.

It is to be learned —
This cleaving and this burning,
But only by the one who
Spends out himself again.

Twice and twice
(Again the smoking souvenir,
Bleeding eidolon!) and yet again.
Until the bright logic is won
Unwhispering as a mirror
I believed.

Then, drop by caustic drop, a perfect cry
Shall string some constant harmony,—
Relentless caper for all those who step
The legend of their youth into the noon.

A Waldo Frank

Silenti come si crede che sia silente uno specchio
le realtà nel silenzio si tuffano, vicino...

Non sono ancora pronto al pentimento;
né a accendere rimpianti. Poiché la falena
altro non curva che la fiamma
immobile implorante. E i baci tremolanti
nei fiocchi bianchi che cadono, — sono
le sole cose, fra tutte,
che abbiano valore.

Si possono imparare —
questa scissione, questo bruciare,
ma solo da chi intenda
di nuovo consumarsi.

Due volte e ancora due volte
(ancora il fumante souvenir,
eidolon sanguinante!) eppure ancora.
Finché la logica splendente sia
vinta senza sussurri, come
si crede sia uno specchio.

Poi goccia a goccia caustica un perfetto pianto
come da uno strumento a corda leverà un'armonia costante, —
un salto inesorabile per tutti quelli che spingono
la leggenda della loro giovinezza nel pieno del meriggio.
