Spesso le opere d’arte e la morte sono strettamente intrecciate le une all’altra. La realtà crudele espressa in immagini può essere sgradevole; eppure se l’energia che traspare dovesse essere riconosciuta cupa e ingiusta potrebbe non essere solo a causa di ciò che rappresenta. Dobbiamo piuttosto vederla come il tentativo di affrontare ciò che di oscuro c’è nelle nostre vite e nel mondo in cui viviamo, come un processo per mutare in comprensione le nostre incomprensioni. Johann Elias Ridinger - Danse Macabre (Mid-18th century)

A German broadside of the Danse Macabre. Nine women of different social rank from empress to fool dance with the dead around two skeletons in a coffin. The entire economy of salvation is depicted, from the Fall, through the crucifixion, to Heaven and Hell. Twelve more traditional Dance Macabre figures surround the central image, wearing clothes that suggest a 16th-century model.
