There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,

and swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

and frogs in the pools singing at night,

and wild plum trees in tremulous white;

robins will wear their feathery fire,

whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

and not one will know of the war,

not one will care at last when it is done;

not one would mind,

neither bird nor tree,

if mankind perished utterly;

and Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,

would scarcely know that we were gone.

Verranno le dolci piogge e l'odore di terra,

e le rondini che volano in circolo con le loro strida scintillanti;

e le rane negli stagni che cantano di notte,

e gli alberi di susino selvatico che fremono di bianco;

i pettirosso vestiranno il loro piumaggio infuocato,

fischiettando le loro fantasie su una bassa recinzione in rete metallica;

e nessuno saprà della guerra,

nessuno presterà attenzione infine quando sarà avvenuto;

nessuno baderebbe,

né uccello né albero,

se l'umanità scomparisse completamente;

e la Primavera stessa, al suo risveglio all'alba,

si renderebbe conto appena che noi ce ne siamo andati.
