Nella scena vi è un richiamo ad una "moda" del mondo della letteratura di quel secolo che vuole che i poeti del decadentismo dediti a tale vizio. L'assunzione di assenzio e laudano si diceva facessero acquisire l'ispirazione necessaria per scrivere opere che imprimessero su carta quelle sensazioni, timori e disagi, vale a dire lo spleen, descritto da Charles Baudelaire nei Les fleurs du mal.
